Poutini Ngāi Tahu is teaming up with Wētā Workshop to tell the story of greenstone trails in four interconnected visitor centres. The first Pounamu Pathways centre will open in Mawhera-Greymouth in December, with Awarua, Kawatiri and Hokitika to follow.

The centre is on the site of the former Māwhera Pā. Ngāti Waewae chair Francois Tumahai says he wants to bring the iwi’s unique historical pūrākau to life. The centres will also embrace the rich tapestry of European heritage and other notable chapters in West Coast history, from gold mining to the coal trade.
